Labour Bureau, Southern Region is located at Besant Nagar, Chennai near sea shore. Labour Bureau, Southern Region has jurisdiction over four States, Andhrapradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu and UT of Pondicherry. At present, this Office is headed by Assistant Director supported with One Economic Officer and Five Field Officers to conduct the Field work in respect of Consumer price index for industrial workers. This office has been entrusted with Price Audit in respect of 21 centers comprising 47 markets. This office also conducts House Rent Surveys and covers 1722 fixed dwellings across the 21 centres in Southern Region for a period of six months. These data in turn would be utilized for the compilation of Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers.

In addition, this office is engaged in conducting of quarterly Quick Employment Survey (4 times a year).This office has to keep liaison with various State Government departments, like Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Price Collection Agencies, N.S.S.O, Labour Commissioner, Chief Inspector of Factory & Boilers, Food & Civil Supplies, Index users, etc. and also with Unions of Employees’ and Employers’. Also attends to other ad-hoc items of work as and when required by both the headquarters at Shimla and Chandigarh.
